Bridges
Hinokage is home to numerious bridges of all sizes, three of which are more than 100 meters over the vallies below. Appearing from out of the surrounding forests, these many beautiful bridges allow for a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape.
Seiun Bridge
青雲橋
At 137 meters above the valley below and 410 meters in length, Seiun Bridge is the largest arch-style bridge in all of Asia.
Ryuten Bridge
龍天橋
Though it is 100 meters above the valley below and 260 meters long, Ryuten Bridge is considered a ‘woodland path’ bridge connecting the small villages of Ohito and Miyamizu within Hinokage. It is the third tallest bridge in Hinokage, but has been recognized as the largest ‘woodland path’ bridge in Japan.
The name ‘Ryuten,’ literally ‘dragon of heaven,’ was selected in a public contest at the time of the bridge’s construction. When it was constructed, the bridge was seen as a prayer that the bridge would promote local development ‘like a dragon ascending into the heavens.’
Tensho Bridge
天翔橋
Connecting the districts of Takasuno and Matsunoki, Tensho Bridge is known as the “old farm road” bridge. Despite this nick-name, however, it is in fact the largest concrete arch bridge in Japan. At 463 meters in length and 143 meters above the valley below, looking down from the center is not for the weak of heart.
Additionally, small windmills affixed the the bridge provide power to brightly light the bridge each night.
