Bamboo Products

竹細工

Hinokage is home to the master bamboo artisan Kazuo Hiroshima, who has been producing bamboo baskets based on traditional methods he learned as an apprentice in the early part of the twentieth century. Increasing interest in traditional crafts since the 1980s has led to exhibits of his work abroad, and today a large collection of his baskets have entered the collections of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural History and the British Museum. Mr. Hiroshima's work is featured in the book “A Basketmaker in Rural Japan,” by Louise Allison Cort and Kenji Nakamura. [Powells.com] [Amazon.com]

Menpa Wooden Lunchboxes

めんぱ

Made from thin strips of Mimosa shaped around a roof and floor of Japanese ceder, these wooden lunchboxes carry a pleasing fragrance that can last for years. Because of the practicality and beauty, they are still used by residents on a regular basis.

Bound Dried Persimmon Rolls

柚子柿製品

Tightly bound in rope to preserve their flavor, the flavor of these locally grown dried persimmons is complimented by adding a layer of shredded citron peal. As one of the signature products of Hinokage, these delicacies are well inside and outside of Miyazaki Prefecture.
